PM Narendra Modi in Varanasi, unveils electric locomotive

Varanasi.   PM Narendra Modi in his visit to Varanasi unveiled the first diesel-to-electric locomotive. He visited his Parliamentary constituency on the birth anniversary of Saint Ravidas.


These electric trains will reduce the emission of greenhouse gas, in addition to being cost effective thereby improving the efficiency of Indian Railways. Immediately post-landing at Lal Bahadur Shastri International Airport, he reached Diesel Locomotive Works where he flagged off the electric train.

The diesel-to-electric conversion is a complete “Make in India” initiative of Indian Research & Development department.

As per railway officials, work on this project began on December 22, 2017. It was followed-through within 69 days.

Mr.Modi visited Saint Ravidas’ temple to become a part of his birth anniversary celebrations. This has been Modi’s second visit to Varanasi on the occasion of Ravidas Jayanti.  Ahead of the Lok Sabha elections, Modi presented Varanasi with several other projects worth Rs. 3300
