08-Jan-2019Qz9xM1sxkZ1New Delhi, Dec 8: Quashing the government order, the Supreme Court on Tuesday reinstated Alok Verma as the CBI chief. The bench said. “the committee constituted under the Delhi Special Police Establishment Act will have to consider the matter afresh and that Verma cannot take any major policy decisions until then.”

A three-judge bench headed by CJI Ranjan Gogoi comprising Justices S K Kaul and K M Joseph pronounced the verdict on two petitions filed by Verma and the other one by an NGO ‘Common Cause’ which challenged the government’s decision.

The government argued that Verma and Special Director Rakesh Asthana were fighting like “Kilkenny cats,” and they had no choice left but to send them on leave. Regarding this, the court said, “The feud between the top aides of CBI was not something that happened overnight to require immediate action.”

Verma and Asthana were relieved from their charges in October after the inner conflict of the bureau became public.
