16 percent quota for Marathas approved by Maharashtra Assembly

New Delhi, Nov 29: Maharashtra Assembly unanimously passed a legislation which grants 16 percent reservation to the Maratha community under the socially and economically backward category.

On the recommendations of State Backward Class Commission, CM Devendra Fadnavis tabled the Action Taken Report. By granting reservation to Marathas, the percentage of reservation has reached 68% which is against the 50% limit set by the Supreme Court. Before this legislation, the percentage of reservation in the state was 52%.

The Maratha community constitutes about 30% of the state population was demanding reservation for a long time, but it was accepted after the report submitted by the State Backward Class Commission.
