69th Foundation Day of IFWJ: Maneka Gandhi applauded women for exposing sexual harassment

New Delhi, Oct 29: Union Minister for Women and Child Development Ms Maneka Gandhi made a startling revelation that 87 percent of women are sexually harassed at the workplace in the first year of their employment. These young women normally do not report incidents of sexual harassment because of social stigma and the shame attached to it. She was speaking in the 69th Foundation Day celebration of the Indian Federation of Working Journalists (IFWJ) which was held in the New Delhi’s Constitution Club of India. Ms Maneka Gandhi expressed concerns over the consolidation of media in the hands of rich business houses.

However, it is a matter of good hope and satisfaction that social media has become very powerful and it has got the capacity to break up the monopoly of the big media houses. It is because of the social media that no news can be now concealed by the televisions or newspapers. Thus, in a way, the traditional media has given way to the new media in the present circumstances every reader. She congratulated all those women who have come forward to exposed the cases of sexual harassment at their workplaces.




She told the gathering of over 350 journalists from all over India that she has seen to it that Internal Complaints Committees (ICCs) setup even in private organisations for curving the sexual harassment of women at the workplaces. More than twenty thousand cases of complaints by women have been received by her ministry in the last two-three years.

She appealed to journalists to give some space to positive reporting so the reader can know that everything is not falling into pieces.

Union Minister of State for Finance Shiv Pratap Shukla expressed the hope that the journalists would continue to fight for the freedom of speech and expression. He narrated a story of emergency when the newspapers were silenced by the draconian acts like Maintenance of Internal Security Act (MISA). Another Union Minister of State for Food Processing Sadhvi Niranjan Jyoti emphasised the importance of journalists from time immemorial which we find in the sages like Narad and Sanjay.




Member of Parliament from Pratap Garh gave the account of his personal experience that how the media has been able to save his and his family’s life. He appealed to the media persons that they must work for the help of the poor and needy. Another Member of Parliament Shri Ram Charitra Nishad said that he was overwhelmed to find himself in the company of such a large number of journalists and promised to be present in the 70th Foundation of the IFWJ regardless of the place he is.

The hallmark of the celebration was that five eminent persons who have rendered outstanding services were felicitated. People who have been felicitated includes Director General of Police Assam and BSF, Padma Shri Prakash Singh for his contribution to the police reforms in India.  Dr. Raja Ram Tripathi for making a significant contribution to the organic, agriculture in the Naxal prone areas of Bastar. He has brought thousands of Adivasi youth to the main stream by providing them employment in the Bastar area. Eminent journalist Arvind Kumar Singh was felicitated for his continuous work in the field of journalism through print and audio-visual media. O.P. Srivastav has already been awarded the Pride of Asia Award in Bangkok but he said that he was deeply touched with the honour that he has received by the IFWJ. His contribution to the field of art, literature and acting is commendable. Another awardee was Dr. Mithiliesh Tripathi known for his entrepreneurial skill and social work.

Representatives from Assam, Bihar, Tamil Nadu, Rajasthan, Uttarakhand, Haryana, Punjab, Chandigarh, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Uttar Pradesh enthusiastically participated in the programme. IFWJ Vice-President Hemant Tiwari welcomed the guests and told in detail about aims and objects of the IFWJ. Secretary-General  Parmanand Pandey briefly told about the IFWJ. The programme was conducted by the IFWJ Secretary Siddharth Kalhans. Prominent personalities who joined in the IFWJ Foundation Day celebration were IFWJ Secretaries Randeep Ghangash, K. Asudhulla, Treasurer Rinku Yadav, IFWJ Working Committee members Shri Sanjay Dwivedi. Chandra Mohan Marwatia from Rajasthan. Hemant Shukla, Utkar Sinha, Rajesh Maheshwari, Rajesh Mishra, Vijay Shankar Chaturvedi, Santosh Gupta, T.B. Singh, Vikas Sharma and others from Uttar Pradesh. Awadhesh Bhargav and N.P. Agarwal from Madhya Pradesh, Tutumoni Phukan from Assam. Chandrashekhar from Bihar. Dr. Upendra Pandey from Chandigarh. Sanjay Jain and others from Haryana. C.S.
