New Delhi, Oct 1: The Nobel Medicine Prize is jointly won by James P Allison of US and Tasaku Honjo of Japan for their discovery of cancer therapy by “inhibition of negative immune regulation."

The discovery uses the ability of the immune system to attack cancer cells by releasing the brakes on immune cells.

The Nobel Prize committee said that the “immune checkpoint” has revolutionised the treatment of cancer and changed the way we view how cancer can be managed.

A statement issued by the committee read, “ Cancer kills millions of people every year and is one of humanity’s greatest health challenges. By stimulating the ability of our immune system to attack tumor cells, this year’s Nobel Prize laureates have established an entirely new principle for cancer therapy.”
