Arif Alvi elected as the President of Pakistan

New Delhi, Sep 5: Arif Alvi, one of the founding members of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party was elected as the 13th President of Pakistan on Tuesday.

A close ally of Prime Minister Imran Khan, the 69 year old Alvi defeated Pakistan Peoples Party’s candidate Aziz Ahsan and Maulana Fazlur Rehman of Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz.

Out of 430 votes cast through a secret ballot in the National Assembly and the Senate, Dr. Alvi got 212 votes, Rehman 131 and Ahsan 81.

Alvi thanked Imran Khan for nominating him for such a big responsibility. Alvi will take the oath on September 9. He served as the general secretary of PTI from 2006 to 2013, he was also elected as a member of the National Assembly in the 2013 general elections.
