AAP Takes Lead In Announcing Its List Of Candidates For Chhattisgarh Assembly Election

Raipur:  Aam Aadami Party (AAP) is charting an expansion route again. It has somehow put the huge reverses in recently concluded high voltage assembly elections in Karnataka behind itself, where the party had fielded more than 20 candidates. All of them lost their deposits.

However, the party has surprised the well-entrenched biggies like Congress and BJP in Chhattisgarh by announcing its first list of 31 candidates for the upcoming assembly elections proposed at the end of this year. This comes just a couple of days after the All India Congress Commitee president Rahul Gandhi announced his intention of finalising the list of all 90 Congress candidates by 15th August this year.
The First list of AAP candidates was announced at a press conference in Raipur on Monday by senior AAP leader Gopal Rai. Chhattisgarh AAP Convener Dr. Sanket Thakur was present during the announcement. He expressed confidence of scoring a better this time around. A celebrated agriculture scientist of Chhatisgarh and a farmer leader, Dr. Thakur is going to contest the election from Raipur Rural constituency. The list accomodates a host of names, who have acheived high in their professional and social lives.

However, the biggest surprise is Dr. Sohanlal Kanwar. He has resigned his BJP membership recently and joined AAP. The party has decided to field him from Samari. This reserved (ST) seat is known to be quite dicey. While it had returned BJP candidate Siddhanath Paikara in 2008, it surprised everyone by electing Pritamram Singh in 2013.

AAP seems to have tried to give two special messages in its list. The first is, that the party values higher education and the second is, that it cares for the farming fraternity more than other parties. As many as 16 candidates have got higher professional and academic degrees. Among them, two have got MBBS degree to their credit. One being a former Deputy Commissioner and three have got LLB degrees to boot. The party has accomodated agricultural activists too on a priority basis, while picking up two RTI activists too.
