Htin Kyaw, President of Myanmar resigns-Newstimes News

New Delhi, Mar 21: President of Myanmar and a close ally of the country’s leader Aung San Suu Kyi resigned from his post on Wednesday to take rest from the current duties and responsibilities.

The announcement was made on his official Facebook page and a new president will be selected within seven days according to the constitution, the post further added.

Speculations of his resignation were being made earlier because of his ill health.

Htin was handpicked by Suu Kyi after the constitution barred her from holding the post.

His role was ceremonial in a sense as Suu Kyi made herself the title State Counsellor and was taking the decisions. But Kyaw was the head of the country and a close ally within the party.

In a time when Suu Kyi is receiving flak from the international community for not speaking on the ethnic cleansing of Rohingya muslims, this resignation will be a complicated thing to deal.

Vice President, Myint Swe will hold the office until a new President is appointed.
