Dhaka, Feb 8: Bangladesh former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia sentenced to five years  imprisonment for corruption on Thursday.

She was the leader of Bangladesh Nationalist Party and found guilty for stealing $252,000 from a trust created for an orphanage. In the same case, her son Tarique Rahman and four others have been sentenced to 10 years in jail.

Zia’s lawyer Khandkar Mahbub Hossain said the ruling was “political vengeance” and would be overturned by a higher court.

Police fired tear gas at thousands of opposition activists before the hearing, who defied heavy security to escort the car taking Zia to the magistrates court.

Many private schools declared a holiday on Thursday in anticipation of the verdict, while transportation services announced a day-long suspension of their operations.

Police have set up check-posts at key entry points of the city in an effort to prevent thousands of rural supporters of BNP and its Islamist allies from marching to the capital.
