Hantavirus claimed 1 life in China, Here's What You Should Know About This Disease

Yunnan: At the time, when the world is trying to combat against coronavirus. A new disease has started rearing in China namely 'Hantavirus'. According to the media report, a resident of Yunnan Province, who was tested positive for the new disease died while traveling on a bus. 


What is Hantavirus?

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) told, Hantavirus is a family of viruses. It is mainly transmitted by rodents and can show varied disease syndrome in people. The name of Hantavirus varies from regionto region. In America, it is known as 'New World' Hantavirus while in Europe and Asia, it is known as 'Old World' -Hantaviruses.

Symptoms of Hantavirus 

New World hantaviruses may cause Hantavirus pulmonary syndrome (HPS), while Old World hantavirus may cause hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS).

What is Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome: Early symptoms of HPS include fatigue, fever and muscle aches. Especially in back, thighs, hips and sometimes in shoulders. An infected person may also experience headaches, dizziness and abdominal problems. Late symptoms usually are seen after four to 10 days, one may show coughing and shortness of breath. It can be fatal too in some cases.

What is Hemorrhagic Fever with Renal Syndrome: Symptoms of HFRS, develops within one to two weeks after coming in contact with the virus. But in rare case one might show symptoms in eight weeks. Initial symptoms include headaches, fever, back and abdominal pain, nausea, and blurred vision. Late symptoms of HFRS are low blood pressure, vascular leakage, acute shock and acute kidney failure.
