Arvind Krishna elected as the new CEO of IBM, joins list of Indian-origin CEOs

New Delhi. Arvind Krishna has been elected as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the tech giant International Business Machines (IBM). The Indian-origin Arvind Krishna has also been elected as a member of the Board of Directors with effect from April 6, 2020. Krishna is currently serving as IBM Senior Vice President for Cloud and Cognitive Software and has also been a principal architect of the company's acquisition of Red Hat. He has replaced longtime CEO Virginia Rometty.


57 years old Krishna leads the IBM unit which provides the cloud and data platform over which the clients of IBM build their future. His current responsibilities also include the IBM Cloud, IBM Security and Cognitive Applications business, and IBM Research. Previously, he was general manager of IBM's Systems and Technology Group's development and manufacturing organization. Prior to this, Krishna had built and led many of IBM's data-related businesses. He has an undergraduate degree from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur, and a PhD. in electrical engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign. He joined IBM in 1990. 


Praising Krishna, Virginia Rometty, IBM Chairman, President and CEO mentioned that Krishna is the right choice for the next era of IBM. He further said that Krishan is a brillaint technologist and has played a major role in developing prime technologies like artificial intelligence, blockchain, cloud and quantum computing. "Arvind has grown IBM's Cloud and Cognitive Software business and led the largest acquisition in the company's history. Through his multiple experiences running businesses in IBM, Arvind has built an outstanding track record of bold transformations and proven business results, and is an authentic, values-driven leader.  He is well-positioned to lead IBM and its clients into the cloud and cognitive era."
